Cockroaches are hunters. One can survive a long time without food. Some can go as long as 6 weeks without a meal! These qualities make cockroaches in our homes hard to control. American cockroaches can live for around one year. With a detached head, it can survive without eating for weeks. Eventually, the cockroach will either desiccate or succumb to mold.
These beings are usually medium to large sized insects. They can amount over 2 inches long. Male cockroaches are naturally smaller than females. Female specimens often tend to be larger and, in some species, the females lack wings where the males possess them. Some types have wings however most winged cockroaches are not good at flying.
Cockroaches like feeling something solid in contact with their bodies, so they seek out cracks and gaps, and will squeeze into spaces that offer them the comfort of a tight fit. Therefore, you will find them hiding behind pictures on a wall.
Cockroaches are found near waste deposits or in the kitchen, where food is present. Thus, these insects are measured as pests because they can spread various diseases they derive from their chosen habitats.
The four most common species in the United States are the American, Brown-Banded, German and Oriental cockroaches.
American cockroaches are found in humid shady areas such as hollow trees, wood piles, and mulch, below roof shingles and in attics. The cockroaches are generally outside, but will come indoors to find food and water or to evade extreme weather conditions.
Brown-Banded cockroaches indulge in warm and dry locations. Samples: near refrigerator motor housings, on the upper walls of cabinets, and inside pantries, closets, dressers, and furniture in general. They seek refuge behind picture frames and beneath tables and chairs, and inside clocks, radios, light switch plates, doorframes, and dressers. It is typical to find them hiding closer to higher ground opposed to the opposite.
German cockroach – The color varies from tan to almost black, and it has two dark, roughly parallel, streaks on the pronotum running top to bottommost from behind the head to the base of the wings. They are mainly scavengers and will feast on a wide variety of foods. They enjoy starches, sweets, grease, and meat products. Garbage is a major food source. Like most of its relations, German cockroaches are out at nighttime when they search for food, water, and companions.
